Summer Math
8 Great Ways to Keep up Your Math Skills During the Summer and Return to School Ahead!
Did you know that your children could lose one to three months' worth of learning during the summer? Math skills do not need to be lost during the summer. Opportunities to practice math are everywhere and can easily be made a part of so many activities we do. They can be fun activities like card games, cooking, gardening, building, crafts, shopping - talk about fractions as you cut up a watermelon, double a recipe, measure the area for your new garden. You can even find math watching the Tour de France – it has become such a science.
Here are eight great ways to keep up those skills!
- Check out some cool online math games! Explore many of the great math sites online. There are so many free resources online providing videos, lessons, worksheets, games and puzzles.
- Explore math during your day by talking math and looking for math in your daily activities. Check out the Crazy 4 Math contest for endless ideas posted by kids. Don’t forget to submit your own entry!
- Play cards! Most card games have math and strategy. You can also adapt many of your favourite games to include even more math. (Dice and Dominos can also be used for math practice).
- Play math music on your ipod or in the car. Check out some of our music on our Radio or order your own.
- Take Sudoku or Kakuro to the beach. You can print off many free games online.
- Read books that combine reading and math. Look for them at your local library. Remember that you can request them at the library too! Many libraries have a budget for new educational children’s books. Visit our recommended book section for a list.
- Skip and skip count! What a great way to combine exercise with mental math skills. Try skip counting backwards!
- Do math during your travels! What’s your car's mileage? What was the average distance traveled per day? Plot out gas prices by Province, State or by day. Which hotel had the best overall rate? What was the difference between your estimated vacation budget and the actual costs?
