Getting It Together for Transition Clearing

Transition Clearing can be anything from downsizing to blending two households to organizing & clearing after a loved one has passed on.

Most people do not want to think of the latter, but it is by far one of the most challenging forms of clutter; and the one we will focus on in this article.

Here is an example.

Your parents are married for 50 years and have lived in the same home. They have not tossed anything out... EVER! Now it is time for one or both of them to move into a retirement home, or maybe one or both of them have passed on. Often it is the children that are left with the task of organizing all of the contents of the family home.

What Do You Need?

  1. Boxes - could be many of them. You will need to separate the items into several categories as listed below.
  2. Thick indelible pen and 8x10 pieces of paper.
  3. Packing tape.
  4. A truck or van to haul items.
  5. Black garbage bags.

What Do You Do?

Ensure that everyone who is involved understand what is going to happen with the belongings. More often than not that means consulting with siblings or even aunts and uncles.

As you make your way from room to room ask yourself these questions:

  1. Sell?
Selling items can take more time and effort then what it is worth unless you have antiques.
  2. Donate?
In some cases this is the easiest and quickest way to really get clearing. There are many organizations that will come by and pick-up these large household items. Ensure that you give them plenty of advance warning as they can book up weeks in advance.
  3. Does anyone in the family want them?
Be sure to check with any family members to see if they would like anything first. Quite often family members might want to keep objects for the sentimental memories they have attached to them.
  4. Do we need to hire outside help with this project?
Most people find this an overwhelming and time-consuming task too big for them or the family. That is why they call in a Professional Organizer. A Professional Organizer is familiar with transitional situations, will listen to your needs, assist you in moving through it and all-in-all make the task go a lot smoother and quicker.
  5. What do we do with collections, memorabilia or valuables?
As for "mother's collection of spoons"... If it doesn't have sentimental value to you or anyone in your family, it may be well worth your while to consult with a collector.

Together Tips

  1. Nothing takes on value unless it is being used.
  2. We never forget our loved ones even if we donate or sell all of their belongings.
  3. Only keep the items that you absolutely need, that you love or that you will use. If not, you'll find yourself having to clear out the clutter in your own home!
  4. Don't feel that you have to make all the decisions in one day. Give yourself time and permission to think things through. This is usually a very emotional time for most people.

One day someone will have to be doing transition clearing with your belongings. Live with freedom, high energy and extra time by living in organization.
