Features of an Organized Home and Life

Do you know one of those people who seems to have it all together? I have a friend who is amazingly organized and accomplishes a lot more than most people. Her organized home is what we all dream ours to be. Every time I visit her home, I am inspired to get more organized and create systems to make my life easier. These are some of the organizational features in her home and lifestyle that we can all aspire to achieve over time.

Minimal Clutter Because "Everything Has a Place"

Everyone knows where to find DVDs, CDs, winter clothing, homework, school handouts, sporting goods, toys, games, gym bags and even the files on the computer. They are all organized in a logical place that makes sense to the family. Each person knows the place to find it and where to return it! This includes those messy backpacks, shoes and keys hanging around the door.

Organized Menus and Food

A planned menu for the week is made prior to the weekly grocery trip. The fridge, pantry and freezer are well stocked - but nothing is wasted! Healthy snacks are easy to find for everyone.

Laundry

There's a regular weekly schedule that makes sure that clean laundry gets put away and the dirty clothes are put in the hamper. Everyone puts their own clean laundry away!

Family Calendar

The calendar is updated and used by all. Even Dad uses it! It is posted prominently in the kitchen close to the phone. The family schedules in quiet time, reading, exercise and a games night.

Timely Departures

Everything is so well organized that getting out the door is a breeze! Backpacks are packed the night before school. The kids clothing for the next day ready. Someone on lunch duty is up early to get lunches and snacks ready. Everyone knows where their stuff is when its time to go.

Chore List

Everyone does their share. There's a regular incentive system that keeps the chores completed. Bins are set up for loose things that need to get put away later. There's no need to panic when an unexpected guest arrives!

A Place for Filing

An organized system has been set up for bill payments and filing. Everyone knows to file to the front. There's even a folder for all those passwords and codes. Receipts and manuals can be found in a jiffy!

Errands Are Planned and Minimized

Errands are minimized by paying bills online and mail order. Other errands are grouped to minimize travel time. Gifts are planned in advance.

Emergency Supplies

Just like Mary Poppin's bag, the bin in the van includes a first aid kit, spare clothing, water & snacks, band-aids, an umbrella, hats, sunscreen and all other seasonal essentials for an unexpected outing. There's a spare key for your car in your bag and one for your house hidden in your yard. You have all emergency phone numbers and medical numbers with you. There's a spare battery and charger for your phone in the car!

More Time for All

The family has more time for spontaneity, play-dates and relaxation because they have stayed organized and managed their time effectively.
